A new approach is being initiated in September of 2000. At the 9:30 a.m. service, children in grade 4 and up will stay in church while children in grades 1 to 3 will leave the sanctuary after the childrens’ story and follow the Christian Reform LIFE curriculum. At the 11 a.m. service, the children will leave after their story to go to their classrooms for the following program:

Purpose/Responsibilities/Working Relationships
The position is Minister at Parkwood. There are 252 households and 264 members on the roll, as of December 1999. During 1999, average attendance at Communion was 167.
There is a Session of 40 members. The following committees report to Session: Worship and Nurture, Mission and Outreach, Finance and Maintenance, and Policy and Planning.

- NARRATIVE – SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Community
Nepean is a city of 125,000 within the regional municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. The city lies adjacent to the southern and western borders of Ottawa. Nepean and other cities in the region are to be integrated into a large city of Ottawa, as per provincial policy.
The area surrounding Parkwood Presbyterian Church (2 km. radius) has a population of 34,600. The total population has not changed significantly in the five years since the previous census. There are over 13,000 dwelling units in this area with 63 percent of them owned. Of the 13,000 units, roughly 6,500 (or one-half) are single detached houses.
Within a few blocks of the church, there are some large apartment buildings (both rentals and condos) as well as townhouses. There is a more rapid "turnover" of families living in the townhouses and rental apartments than in the single houses and condo apartments in our area. There is a gradual shift towards more "new Canadians" in the area, especially in the townhouses. Some of the newcomers are Muslims which means they would not be attracted to a Presbyterian church.
Many of the single-family houses in the area were built in the 1960s. To the extent that the original owners are still living in these houses, there will be "turnover" as these owners pass away or move to apartments. A challenge will be to identify the new families moving into the area and to invite them to Parkwood.
The rising number of single parent families is increasing the need for leisure and other activities for young people in these home situations. Churches may be able to fill this need in the community. The young people may not be able to attend church regularly if they are in an alternating parent arrangement.
Parkwood is located relatively close to Merivale Road, a major business area in Nepean. The many stores on this street provide part-time employment for adults and young people. To the extent that these jobs require work on Sunday, part-time employees may find it difficult to attend church on Sunday.
Goals and Objectives
The congregation of Parkwood sees its greatest strength to be its friendly, caring and supportive people, united in Christian fellowship. There are many dedicated people who give freely of their time and talents. Parkwood is a Christ-centred congregation, well grounded in faith, nurtured through Bible study and the Gospel message. It is an inclusive congregation that welcomes people of all backgrounds and provides a variety of programs aimed at meeting diverse spiritual and practical needs, such as Pastoral Care. Parkwood provides both traditional and contemporary worship services each Sunday. The leadership, guidance and development from a caring and highly regarded minister have strengthened the congregation immeasurably.
The session and the congregation see growth, outreach and our young people as its main objectives over the next few years. We need to attract more young families and young people to Parkwood. Some initiatives were undertaken recently. A LOGOS program was put in place one year ago. A full-time Director of Youth and Outreach Ministries was hired in May of 2000, with his contract to run through December 31, 2001. The approach to Christian Education is being reviewed, as is the approach to the spiritual development program for our young people.
Program Areas in the Congregation
Worship life
Parkwood’s worship life centres around two worship services:
- 9:30 a.m. with contemporary music and "end of service" time for public requests for prayers of both thanksgiving and intercession
- 11 a.m. traditional service with the same sermon as at 9:30 service
At the 9:30 service, the Praise Ensemble usually sings one or more special songs while at the 11 a.m. service there is a choir.
There are 6 Bible Study groups with some groups for men, some for women and some mixed. A Bethel Bible Series as well as membership and Christian growth courses are offered.
Pastoral Care
A dedicated group of six members form the Pastoral Care Team to assist in the provision of pastoral care for the congregation. Members have taken the 10-week Basic Pastoral Care Training Program and various workshops. The Team provides a Communion Service and Social Hour for "shut-ins" in the spring and fall.
Christian Education and Youth Ministry
There is a relatively new LOGOS program for young children and youth. The Christian Education program is being revised. For the past several years, the congregation had a paid part-time youth director who led or assisted in three groups for young people through college age. To increase our emphasis on youth work, the congregation approved the hiring of a full-time Director of Youth and Outreach Ministries for the period from June 1, 2000 to December 31, 2001.
Mission and Outreach
Each year we have a Mission Weekend and Mission Fair. A representative from one mission area delivers the sermon on the Sunday of the weekend. As well, up to four special appeals are selected each year for the particular attention of the congregation.
The outreach into the community has primarily been a Vacation Bible School for one week in August and the delivery of invitations to attend Parkwood. The VBS is advertised in the community. General invitations to attend Parkwood were delivered to four large apartment buildings close to Parkwood. As well, for three consecutive years the congregation has provided a strawberry social that is open to residents of the area.
Involvement in the denomination
The congregation is active at both the Presbytery and Synod level. Some elders at Parkwood serve on Presbytery committees. Synod meetings are attended. Our representative elder is also the Presbytery and Synod webservant.
Our representative elder attended General Assembly in both 2000 and 1996. Rev. McPhee attended in 1997.
Parkwood is a member of Renewal Fellowship and supports local activities. Both the Minister and the representative elder are on the local committee.
Administration and stewardship of financial resources
Financial statements are prepared annually by the treasurer, audited by the auditor and then approved at the annual congregational meeting. The treasurer also prepares the annual financial reports for the Presbytery and Revenue Canada.
A budget committee is struck each year, consisting of the chairpersons of all Session committees and the Treasurer. Each committee develops and submits their budget to the budget committee. The policy and planning committee prepares the proposed remuneration for the minister and other paid staff. After the treasurer puts the data into the required financial format, the budget committee meets to consider the budget. The budget approved by the budget committee is submitted to the congregation for approval at the annual general meeting.
Members of the finance and maintenance committee are appointed to subcommittees that are responsible for the maintenance and replacement of the physical assets of the church. This includes the maintenance of insurance coverage and an inventory of the physical assets of the church.
Parkwood has an Outreach Fund of $75,000 that was financed by two separate bequests. The annual interest earned by the fund is used for various outreach projects as approved by the congregation. As well, there is a capital expenditures fund of $25,000 that is available for capital improvements or repairs.

Finances and Property
The church property consists of the church building, the Mulvagh Wing (converted manse) and a paved parking lot for roughly 50 cars, located at the corner of Chesterton and Meadowlands in Nepean. The property consists of approximately 1.5 acres.
Historically, the church building was completed in 1974. The Minister moved from the manse to his own house in 1985. The manse was then converted into a series of meeting rooms and a nursery. The conversion involved a substantial renovation to the first floor, including a doorway into the church. Subsequently, the building was named the Mulvagh Wing. In 1995, a major expansion/renovation to the church building was started and completed.
The congregation has no financial debt. There are no major physical needs at present. Some preliminary discussion has begun, however, on the renovation of the second floor of the Mulvagh Wing and on the expansion of the parking lot.
Parts of the building are rented to outside groups. A Seventh Day Adventist congregation rents the church on Saturday. An Alcoholics Anonymous group rents the lower hall one night during the week. Other rentals occur from time to time.
